Hello ladies!

If the weather and roads permit, we will be having a parenting circle this week about our favorite mama books. Please bring your favorite parenting resource book to share with us (we are going to be mean and say no Love & Logic this time, since we've talked about it quite a bit in the last year). And, if you could also bring a favorite kid book--either a baby board book you still are miraculously not sick of, toddler-friendly book, first chapter book...whatever leaps to mind as an all-time favorite.

We will be taking a few minutes to share our book finds with each other, so please bring a pen and piece of paper to jot things down. If this weather keeps up, we will all have to stock up on books to keep our kids from turning to indoor goo.

Parents - take advantage of this great opportunity to have a Friday night out on the town without the kids! This is one of PEG’s most exciting and popular programs! Let the kids come to the gym and have 4 awesome hours of supervised play in a fun and exciting environment. Bring a sack dinner and evening snack will be provided. Events include obstacle courses, trampoline, group games, crafts, movies and lots of FUN!
Pre-Registration is required as we must have 10 children in order to host the event. Sign up on the bulletin board or call the gym to reserve your spot. Registration will remain open until the Wednesday before the event

Welcome! I look forward to meeting each of you on September 10^th!

I have a few reminders:

In September, we will be using the outdoor playground, please dress your child/children appropriately.
Please don’t drop your child/children off prior to 8:45AM. (P.S. I Love You starts at 9:15 AM.)
This year, the teachers are instituting a policy of having BOTH parent and child/children wash their hands before doing any play or drop-off. This will help with general good-health practices and slow the spread of any flu germs. Pullman Kiddos Needing Some Help -- House Fire

A young family that is known to many in our community had their home burn down a week and 1/2 ago.
They are in need of clothes for their two children. A 10 year old boy (5th grade; we're checking on his size) and a 5 year old girl that wears a size 6-7.
If you have clothes and/or some toys that you think these kids could use (note: they are currently living at a local hotel), please bring them by Claudia Mickas' or Lisa Marquart's home on Sundance.
Anything you can contribute will be donated on behalf of other children in our community. . . "kids thinking about kids."

Kindness and Love Goal

I am looking for, but have yet to find, pictures illustrating ways kids can be kind to their siblings (I've found pictures of frogs, lots of dialogue, etc. but am looking for something more 'real'; something before conflict resolution is needed).
A family chart? A sibling chart? Something I can hang on the fridge?
Anyone know of a great resource or do I need to put something together? If I do, I might ask some of you for a few ideas on how Parents and Kids can show love and kindness to each other.

Yard Sale Fundraiser

I thought I would pass this along to those of you who might be like me: stuff to sell but not enough to have my own yard sale. This is a perfect, low stress, opportunity to maybe make some money and get rid of some stuff! This is a fundraiser for the Catholic church (set up much like the hospital's Mom to Mom sale). I am just going to cut and paste the advertisement in the bulletin:

Okay Everybody! Are you ready for more information about the new, the wonderful, the exciting parish-wide event that the Catholic Daughters are planning? It's our first-annual parish-wide YARD SALE!August 15th, 8 am-12 noon. Families may rent space around the church grounds (you'll get a table to use to display your stuff as well) and you can sell your stuff to returning students and families in the community. We will charge you a rental fee of 10 dollars for the space as the fundraiser. It will be a FUN time for all. You can arrive early on the 15th with your stuff to set up your space, OR we'll have the church open on Friday night the 14th with lovely CDA volunteers to assist you with setting up your sale-able items the night before, if that's more convenient. Be Your Best Self Program!

Last year we began a new tradition with the young people of Pullman. America’s Junior Miss has a Be Your Best Self program encouraging young people to strive be healthy, involved, studious, ambitious and responsible.

We would like to invite children in your family to participate in this program on Thursday, July 30^th from 11:30am-1:00pm at Beasley. The program will begin promptly at 11:30, and upon the completion of their BYBS presentation, the kids will get to eat lunch with the girls.

This program would be perfect for children in grade school, if you are interested, please RSVP by Wednesday July 29th.

Summer Reading Programs

Barnes & Noble (The Bookie Too!) offers a summer reading program for grades 1-6. This one is super easy. Go in and pick up a reading log. **Limit of 2 free books per child.**

1. Read any 8 books and record them on your Summer Reading Journal.
2. Bring your completed Reading Journal to The Bookie Too between now and September 7th.
3. Choose your free book from the list (several books to choose from at each grade level).

Neill Public Library also has a reading program. Again, a very simple thing to do with your kids to keep them reading throughout the summer. This program is for kids of ALL ages and runs through August 31. If you register between June 11-14, you can enter to win a $200 grand prize of local gift certificates and items. Register by July 13th to earn two free books.

1. Pick up a reading calendar at the library.

2. Place an "X" for each day you read, were read to, or listened to a book on CD/tape for 20 minutes or more.

3. After 20 days of reading/listening, return your completed log and choose a FREE BOOK!

The first 500 to sign up at NPL will receive a Papa Murphy's personal pizza coupon.

Neill Public Library also has many other special programs during the summer. Musicians, magicians, comedy, and the Berenstain Bears at Reaney Park. Pick up a schedule for this too.

Lemon Curd Cheesecake Recipe

Hi Ladies. Several of you asked for the recipe for the cheesecake from the party last week. Here it is!

For lemon curd:
1 teaspoon finely grated fresh lemon zest
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup sugar
3 large eggs
1/2 stick (1/4 cup) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces For crust:
1 1/3 cups finely ground graham cracker crumbs (5 oz)
1/3 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

For filling:
3 (8-oz) packages cream cheese, softened
1 cup sugar
3 large eggs
3/4 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
Special equipment: a 9- to 91/2-inch (24-cm) springform pan
Accompaniment: blueberries

Preparation
Make lemon curd:Whisk together zest, juice, sugar, and eggs in a 2-quart heavy saucepan. Add butter and cook over moderately low heat, whisking frequently, until curd is thick enough to hold marks of whisk and first bubbles appear on surface, about 6 minutes.
Force lemon curd through a fine-mesh sieve into a wide shallow dish, scraping bottom of sieve, then cover surface with wax paper. Cool completely, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes.
Make and bake crust:Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 350°F. Invert bottom of springform pan (to make it easier to slide cake off bottom), then lock on side. 3Stir together crust ingredients in a bowl, then press onto bottom and 1 inch up side of springform pan. Place springform pan in a shallow baking pan and bake 10 minutes, then cool crust completely in springform pan on a rack.
Make filling and bake cheesecake:Reduce oven temperature to 300°F.
Beat together cream cheese and sugar in a bowl with an electric mixer at medium speed until smooth, 1 to 2 minutes. Reduce speed to low and add eggs 1 at a time, beating until incorporated. Beat in sour cream and vanilla until combined.
Pour two thirds of cream cheese filling into crust, then spoon half of lemon curd over filling and swirl curd into filling with a small knife. (Avoid touching crust with knife to prevent crumbs getting into filling.) Repeat with remaining filling and curd.
Bake cheesecake until set 1 1/2 inches from edge but center trembles when pan is gently shaken, about 45 minutes. (Center of cake will appear very loose but will continue to set as it cools.) Transfer springform pan to a rack and immediately run a knife around top edge of cake to loosen. Cool completely, about 2 hours, then chill, uncovered, at least 4 hours. Remove side of springform pan before serving.

Cooks' Notes: ·Lemon curd can be made 1 week ahead and chilled, covered.·Crust (without filling) can be made 1 day ahead and kept, covered, at room temperature.·Cheesecake can be chilled, loosely covered, up to 2 days. Cheesecake must be completely chilled before covering to prevent condensation.

Justin and I volunteered to host a table at the Campus Ministry Benefit Dinner hosted at Simpson this Sunday night at 5pm.
Cost is $25/person, $50/couple, $60/family (children's dinner and activities provided downstairs).

Home Project (if you have things to exchange/share/etc. bring them -- it seemed to be a success last week) and "Chick Flick" 27 Dresses will play on a tv set in the big room or kitchen depending on where you want to watch the film (not the big screen since there is a sound-delay on the projection unit)
School age children on break are welcome at PS this week; we'll have some moms and kiddos gone so there is room
The WSU Women's Rugby team is still interested in raising funds for their tourney, feel free to contact Leah if you would like work done at your place at a rate of $9.00/hour
If anyone has an old round plastic garbage can or drum with a lid that you're looking to get rid of, let Lisa M know as her boys are looking to make a composter that they can poke holes in and then roll around a couple times a week

The WSU Women's Club Rugby Team is having a fundraiser this weekend in order to raise money for travel expenses to participate in the Pacific Coast Rugby League Championship Tournament in California.

Members of the team will be available between the hours of 10:00 am through 6:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, March 28th and 29th to help out community members with spring cleaning, yard work, babysitting, etc. at $9.00 an hour. FYI,
Just a reminder to be diligent about hand-washing and general health.
A staff report went out to WSU on March 21st letting them know that there has been an increase in documented flu cases in the area and through WSU health.
Many physicians note that the time to be a bit more aware of exposure to illnesses occurs the first week and 1/2 that WSU students are back in town from travels (they come from all over and bring back various illnesses from their travels).

Hope all is well with each of you on this lovely count-down to Spring that only Good Ol’ Mother Nature can provide us with here in the Northwest.
A few updates:
- Program this week = Alexa Scranton will come to demonstrate how to mix your own ‘child/family safe cleaning products’. She will bring extra supplies, but if you have an empty spray bottle, bring it to help defray costs. If you have any questions shoot Robyn an email or give her a call. Also, if you have an extra funnel that could be used for the day, please bring it.
- Robyn will handle announcements this week as I’ll be out-of-town. Miss you! . . . capture the great info for me, will you? J
- Remember to sign-in when you arrive – we care about you and your kiddos and definitely want to be able to account for everyone should we have a fire-drill.
- If there is a 2 hour snow delay with Pullman Public Schools, PS will be cancelled. You can check the PSD website by 6am.

We are heading to Schweitzer on Saturday with the 3 girls to ski. We want to take Aubree, 3 1/2 yrs old, skiing on the bunny hill. I expect that Aubree will ski for about 30 minutes and then she'll be done for the day. Does anyone have kids snow boots and skis I could borrow? Aubree wears a kids size 11.

Movies in Pullman for March

Rumor has it that the Final Surprise Movie for the Winter Movie Series will be Inkheart. According to imdb.com, this movie is rated PG for fantasy adventure action, some scary moments and brief language.

As Lisa posted earlier in February, WSU offers some free movies on campus. One that may be of interest to the youngsters in our families is Bolt. Bolt will be shown March 27-29 and is also rated PG for some mild action and peril. All films are FREE to students and the public (unless otherwise noted) and are shown in the CUB Auditorium. Showtimes are 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, unless otherwise noted.

Mamma Mia! Milk and Twilight are also offered at the CUB... mom's night out maybe?

Fancy Nancy and Priscilla

Just finished bedtime stories with Megan (naughty Jacob was already in bed) and just had to share these two favorites of ours. Fancy Nancy by Jane O'Connor and Robin Preiss-Glasser (Neill Library has 7 different Fancy Nancy books.)

There are several Fancy Nancy books in hardback and now many more new ones in paperback that are easy readers. I just peeked at the website (http://www.fancynancybooks.com/) and the release dates are posted. There's also a couple sticker books too.

I would happily read these books to Megan every night if she asked me to. They are very well written and the illustrations are fabulous. If you have a little girl in your life, these are perfect!Priscilla and the Pink Planet by Jocelyn Hobbie (Neill Library has 4 of these books.)

This is a newer series to me but I've already fallen in love with them. Similar to the Fancy Nancy books, the author and illustrator are amazing!

There's also Priscilla and the Pink Planet, Priscilla Superstar, Priscilla and the Splish-Splash Surprise and Priscilla and the Great Santa Search.

1) Kindergartners are off this week in Pullman Public Schools due to conferences. Please let Claire know if you would like to bring your sweet Kinder with you to PS.
2) Clean-up -- we no longer have to put the tables away as the new custodian at SUMC would like to do this. The request is that we continue to set up chairs as we have in the past, and simply move the tables back towards the office (don't put legs down, he'll do that too).
3) For all of you participating in the blood drive this Tuesday running from 1:00-5:45, thanks! There are 3 more slots available for donating if you, your significant other, a friend, etc. are interested (note: child care is available).

Village Centre Cinemas in Pullman is offering children's movies every weekend beginning this weekend, January 17, 2009. Films run every Saturday and Sunday at 10:00am and 12:30pm.

Rock 'n' Roll Seattle

Just wanted to pass on that Rock 'n' Roll Marathons are coming to Seattle in 2009! This run is replacing the disappointing Seafair Marathon that had so many problems last year in 2008. But I digress, back to the good news - RNR Marathons have a band at every mile and each runner gets into an evening concert! They are suppose to be lots of fun and I am just excited that Seattle finally has one! The run is June 27th and the run starts in Tukwilla and ends at Qwest Field in Seattle.

Food for Fines at Neill Public Library

Do you have any fines at the Neill Public Library? Well if so, next week is the time to clear them. When I was in there this morning, I had my money ready to pay my wee fine and the nice gal behind the desk gave me the option of paying it now or waiting until next week and pay with food instead. 1) What a nice lady for telling me the options! and 2) What a great thing our library will do for our community!

Greetings!

I am so pleased with the feedback I have received regarding the scrub's craft! I am just thrilled that so many of you enjoyed the craft. Believe it or not, I actually had a lot to say about the craft, but didn't - I was just so emotional that particular day. I appreciate that you all understand. So, I decided to blog about this once we were set-up in Canada and well, let's just say we were constantly busy - out of the hotel room by 9 AM and back at 11 PM. So, now I am back in the states and hanging at my parents for Thanksgiving. Here are some pictures from the show prep (at my house) and the show (the picture from the show is from the last day on Sunday and we had sold out of a lot by then): As you saw on craft day, scrubs are super fun and can be super easy to make! In fact, you probably have most ingredients in your house! For our scrubs we used:

1/3 c Olive Oil
1/6 c Jojoba Oil
1/6 c Avocado Oil
1 1/4c Sugar (White)
Fragrance/Essential Oil

You can substitute Olive Oil for all of the oil (2/3 c) or substitute other oils into the formula. You can use a combo of white and/or brown sugar. Additionally, you can use coloring - such as food coloring, micas, or other skin safe colorants. See below, for some fun scrubs and other products I did for a competition:
A note on Olive Oil... I prefer Olive Oil as a primary base just because it is mild and quite moisturizing. I originally started soapmaking with Olive Oil and am still partial to it today. Now, that is not to say there aren't other oils you can use.

Now a note on preservatives... we didn't add a preservative to the scrub at PS. When discussing the issue of preservatives with my husband, it is his understanding that a lot of water would have to penetrate the scrub in order to grow any "fuzzies" due to the nature of the sugar. I have had my test scrub I did for this class in my shower since last September and so far so good.

Family Notebook "Recipe/Instructions"

Some of you asked for an outline of the family notebook organizer I use. So, here's the basic format:
Using a standard notebook with front pocket (one that can fit into a diaper bag/is easy to grab-and-go/etc) designate the following areas:

- Pocket:

incoming mail and items you need to turn-and-burn that week
a couple thank you cards with stamped envelopes
notepad/daily list spiral

- Section 1: Monthly calendars (I print mine from my Outlook program every few months -- whatever wasn't scheduled at printing, I simply add with pen/pencil)

- Section 2: Kid Info

Copy of Certificate of Live Birth (I need these in my notebook for travel reasons; airlines, etc. request copies for children)
A simple Medical Record Table on an 8.5 x 11 Sheet for each of my kids (Date, Height, Weight, Vaccine, Misc.)

- Section 3: Phone Lists with most frequently used lists in the front (I have Mom's Groups, Neighborhood, Preschool, Church, Our official contact list -- Christmas card/Business Peeps, and House -- business cards of anyone who has worked on our house in any capacity stapled to paper, and then just old contact lists that I use infrequently but sometimes still need to reference)

Cyber Bullying Presentation - Pullman

On Tuesday, September 23, students at Lincoln Middle School will be participating in one of three grade level assemblies about cyber bullying. The program is presented by StandUp! spokesperson Shanterra McBride, a nationally renowned speaker. The program is designed to educate students about this relatively modern form of bullying and give them tools to prevent it. Ms. McBride will also host a question and answer session for staff right after school.

At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, Lincoln Middle School will host Ms. McBride in a session for parents. This program is designed to educate parents about these uses and abuses of technology and to offer preventative strategies for families. As a part of the evening program, District Technology Coordinator Garren Shannon will outline other available resources targeting cyber bullying and general internet safety. Little Mermaid at Beasley Coliseum

The 2008-2009 WSU Family Series just sent out their lineup for this year. The first show offered is The Little Mermaid performed by the Missoula Children's Theater. There are two shows at 3pm and 7pm on Saturday, October 4. Tickets prices are $6.50 for adults and $4.50 for kids.

I just checked www.beasley.wsu.edu and it said "tickets soon." Keep the rest of us posted if you see that the tickets become available.

Fall Registration Is Now Due

The Steering Committee will be meeting to plan for the Fall Session on Monday, August 18... a response before then would be greatly appreciated!

If you need another brochure either for yourself or a friend, there will be extras at the church, at the Neill Public Library, as well as other various locations around town.

Home Video Software?

Can you guys recommend a software program for editing home videos?
I'm currently using Windows Movie Maker which is terrible with Windows Vista. It is constantly freezing up. So I want to purchase a different program, but have no idea what to get. Do you know of a program that is easy to use and not too expensive?

Hello everyone!! Just wanted to pass on some info. I heard on the radio yesterday. In support of the Amber Alert system, they are having an event at the Daily Grind, I assume on Main St., this Saturday from 10am - 1pm. They will be doing photographs, fingerprints, and a DNA swab of children to keep on file at the Police Station. Parents also get to take home a safety packet of info. After participating, kids will receive a FREE ice cream cone from Licks!!
